The Annearrundell County Free School was established by an act of the Colonial Assembly in 1723. The school is thought to be the oldest one-room schoolhouse in Maryland that is still standing. Docents will be highlighting a "Colonial Education" as part of the Maryland Day "Unity Through Community" 2025 celebration. A schoolmarm will demonstrate the preparation of johnnycakes and will provide a sampling. Children will make butter. A schoolmaster will demonstrate colonial toys. Children will write on slates. Children will also use a quill pen and write with walnut ink made from walnuts found on the property. Additional hands-on activities are being planned. Come meet colonial educators and learn what education was like over 300 years ago. Admission and all hands-on activities are free.

Come to Arts Lab and learn about a fun, fast, and exciting clay glaze process called Raku. Members of our Clay on the Bay program will demonstrate how to decorate and fire. Threshold - A solo exhibition by Elizabeth Kendall in the Patricia Barland Gallery

Standing on the threshold we are both coming and going, leaving behind and anticipating what’s ahead. In that moment between we can create something new and let go of what isn’t serving us anymore. And we also know we will return to cross back over the threshold and bring experiences with us to enrich and expand. Think of it as both the breathe and the space between the breathe. I make work that celebrates the past, future and the space between.

Good Trouble - Join Briayna Cuffie as she introduces stories about Civil Rights history in Annapolis. Hear about the county’s first African American police officer, Reginald Harris, Sr. who was encouraged by school teacher, Marita Carroll to join up.  There are family names in Annapolis that carry on the work of the brave individuals who took risks to improve opportunities for all. Archival interviews will be played featuring participants from sit-ins at local restaurants. The “Annapolis Five” descendants will share family stories about at an event at the former Terminal Café, now the site of the Graduate Hotel, that sparked changes for the better.

Children will be encouraged to create a picket sign to express their views as an example of civil disobedience - an important strategy for making systemic change throughout our country's history.

The Severn Cross Roads Foundation (SCRF) will be celebrating Maryland Day by collecting Maryland Memories from local residents to add to its local history collection. Did you learn to sail at Indian Landing? Do you remember the old Millersville Elementary building? Are you an Arundel High alum? Your family story is part of local history. Stop by the Cross Roads Schoolhouse on Sunday, March 23 from 1 to 5 PM to share your stories about growing up in Anne Arundel County and enjoy some exhibits from the Dulaney History Room highlighting local history.

 

In an effort to promote youth participation and encourage interest in local history, SCRF is also offering the AMERICAN HERITAGE Merit Badge on March 23 with the help of Troop 192. Come hear the musical stylings of the Dan Meyer Choir as they perform music celebrating life in Maryland. The concert will feature the song "Maryland Free!!!" which was written in 1860 to celebrate emancipation in Maryland.
The concert will be from 2-3. We invite you to come a little early and stay a little long to check out the exhibit and learn more about Annapolis hero, Wiley H. Bates, and the school that bore his name.
