Maryland Day Weekend Brings Over 45 Events to Anne Arundel County
Presented by the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area | March 21-23. 2025
Anne Arundel County, MD – Maryland Day Weekend, taking place from March 21-23, promises an exciting and educational celebration during Maryland’s birthday, with over 45 events throughout Anne Arundel County. This annual weekend of events offers free or $1 activities that bring communities together to explore the rich history, culture, and heritage of the region.
The weekend is packed with family-friendly experiences, perfect for a fun and educational family getaway. As you travel between participating sites you can also discover farmers markets, wineries, farm-to-table restaurants, boutique shops, and historical inns. Maryland Day Weekend is an affordable way to enjoy a variety of attractions across the county.
This year’s theme “Unity through Community” reflects the passion of local storytellers that will be bringing people together to showcase the many diverse landscapes and stories that make up our shared past and future.
“After a winter of hibernation, these events create fun opportunities to explore the many communities that make up Anne Arundel County,” says Erik Evans, Marketing Director for Maryland Day Weekend. “With so many types of events, there is something for everyone to enjoy this spring weekend.”
Event Highlights include:
Northern Anne Arundel County:
The Chesapeake Arts Center will feature several art exhibits and hands-on craft-making for children.
The Benson Hammond House hosts NASA engineer and physicist Sabrina Thompson, founder of the Girl in Space Club, who will present a special event about her new line of space suits for women.
Hancock’s Resolution Farm is open for tours that include a discussion about former resident Stephen Hancock and the Revolutionary War along with kid-friendly activities.
Western Anne Arundel County:
The Odenton Heritage Society and Lithium Walks offer free tours and special exhibits.
Historic Baldwin Hall will gather historical stories from locals and host a scouting event.
Annapolis Area:
ArtFest returns to Maryland Hall offering art exhibits, performances, and a free concert.
Additional concerts will take place at Wiley Bates Legacy Center and St. John’s College.
The Maryland Federation of Art will host an artist demonstration and local artist sale.
The Pride of Baltimore tall ship will be docked at City Dock for tours.
Numerous museums and historic sites in Annapolis will host special events highlighting the area’s rich heritage.
Southern Anne Arundel County:
Experience a school from the early 1700s at the Free School in Davidsonville.
The Archaeology Lab will be open at Historic London Town with living history interpreters in colonial clothing, showcasing exhibits full of artifacts.
The Captain Avery Museum will host family-friendly activities and a reading by local author Janie Suss from her book Oscar and Olive Osprey: A Family Takes Flight and a showing of the film "The Biggest Little Fish You've Never Seen”.
The Historic Village at Harrington Harbor North will offer guided tours.
Art Lab of South County will feature special exhibits.
Outdoor Adventures:
Enjoy several walking tours in downtown Annapolis, a guided hike at Bacon Ridge, or an archaeological dig at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
Visit the Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery, for a “Say My Name” Ceremony.

Good Trouble - Join Briayna Cuffie as she introduces stories about Civil Rights history in Annapolis. Hear about the county’s first African American police officer, Reginald Harris, Sr. who was encouraged by school teacher, Marita Carroll to join up. There are family names in Annapolis that carry on the work of the brave individuals who took risks to improve opportunities for all. Archival interviews will be played featuring participants from sit-ins at local restaurants. The “Annapolis Five” descendants will share family stories about an event at the former Terminal Café, now the site of the Graduate Hotel, that sparked changes for the better. Children will be encouraged to create a picket sign to express their views as an example of civil disobedience - an important strategy for making systemic change throughout our country's history.

Is there art in nature? Nature's Readymades presents an extraordinary selection of gongshi (scholars’ rocks or viewing stones) drawn from the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C. Carved by nature and relished by Chinese literati as early as the Tang dynasty (7th c.), these paradoxical objects are worlds in miniature, presenting the vital energy of the universe in a hardened, static form.

Majel Connery is a composer, vocalist, and roving musicologist combining the beauty of Classical music with the power of modern technology. Her voice has been called "superb" by the New York Times and her compositions "thoroughly Schubertian" by the Wall Street Journal. Connery’s environmental compositions have been performed around the world, including her own recent premiere of Elderflora at Seattle Symphony/Octave 9, and the 2023-24 tour of “The Rivers are our Brothers” by Grammy-winning choir Chanticleer. An educator working at the intersection of arts and scholarship, Connery has created incubator classrooms and productions with artists like Caroline Shaw and Ken Ueno on campuses like Stanford, UC Berkeley, Wellesley, and Princeton. In radio, Connery hosts the NPR/CapRadio podcast A Music of Their Own and Reverberations with New Amsterdam Records. She holds a PhD in musicology from the University of Chicago and an A.B. in music from Princeton.
Poets in the Conversation Room with Timothy Donnelly - Conversation Room (Mellon Hall)

Timothy Donnelly is the author of the poetry collections Twenty-seven Props for a Production of Eine Lebenszeit (2003), The Cloud Corporation (2010), which won the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, and The Problem of the Many (2020). He earned a BA from Johns Hopkins University, an MFA from Columbia University, and a PhD from Princeton University.
Spencer Bailey, in an article for poetryfoundation.org, called The Cloud Corporation “an eclectic, albeit judicious, mix of sprawling, cinematic subjects and literary traditions—bridging heightened, Victorian diction, say, with the modern tongue.” Donnelly’s poems have been published in anthologies such as Joyful Noise: An Anthology of American Spiritual Poetry, as well as magazines and journals including Harper’s, jubilat, The Nation, The Paris Review, PEN America, Ploughshares, TriQuartely and various others. His work has also been translated in German and Italian. Donnelly is an assistant professor and director of undergraduate creative writing at Columbia University. He is also the poetry editor for Boston Review. Donnelly is originally from Rhode Island but now lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and two daughters.
